2008 was a tough year. I abruptly ended a relationship, finished grad school, and moved to California for a different relationship that very quickly blew up in my face - and oh yeah, I got in a car accident on the drive west - it was a Real Dumb Idea™. I was left with little but regret, guilt, and confusion. I had a shitty job, a noisy apartment with a bunch of roommates, and a lot of time to think. I’ve always had a hard time writing when I know that other people can hear my process, so I tried my best to write and record as quietly as possible - these songs are about as raw and autobiographical it gets - real sad bastard music. In spite of how alone and stupid I felt at the time, I’ve always felt that these songs were an important step in my progression as a songwriter - instead of earlier efforts to be oblique and artful, I wanted to try to be as direct as possible and describe my experience in a relatable way. I was never sure if these songs felt "complete" enough to be released, but what the hell else am I going to do with them?
